While the weather outside this morning was definit While the weather outside this morning was definitely good enough to ride outdoors, trying to pack lots of things into this Sunday called for a short and sharp #zwift ride. I put on what is still one of my favourite kits, the #teamtype1 kit. And of course in Zwift rode in a kit in the same theme. Managed to set some personal best power numbers for durations up to nearly two minutes. Not that exciting but it shows I worked hard in some short efforts including sprints during the ride. Diabetes behaved itself mostly for the 70 minute ride with a 25% reduction in basal and around 30gm of free carbs beforehand. When your teammates from a @gozwift #teamtype1 tea When your teammates from a @gozwift #teamtype1 team time trial team give you a call up (well, they suggested I join) a mere thirty minutes before the start and you’ve only finished dinner, what is one to do? Kit up, get the bike on the trainer, update Zwift and try and warm up! Not ideal, but a good hard hit out all the same. Diabetes control wasn’t ideal given the little warning to prepare, but I got through. If any of the Type 1 Diabetes community out there are on Zwift and haven’t heard of the Zwift Team Type 1 community and Race team, drop me a message. So I’ve been a bit quiet on the Gram lately. And o So I’ve been a bit quiet on the Gram lately. And on the blog. Truth be told, I haven’t even been riding bikes much lately either. But I’m hoping to change all of that! Today I rode out to Hoopers Inlet and back which was around 67km by the time I got home. A good spell on gravel called for the Crux with some gravel tires. And while this is coming dangerously close to getting into bike packing, I had a bar bag on the bike. I can now see why they’re a thing! Anyway. The roads were great and the weather was pretty spectacular for this time of year. Check out that flat water with reflections! Diabetes went ok with no major lows while out, helped by taking in @hammernutritionnz gels and Perpetuem. #type1diabetes #diabetes #cycling #gravel #typeonecyclist

New Zealand is currently locked down to a level th New Zealand is currently locked down to a level that means racing is not allowed to happen, but there’s a chance that with only 4 days to spare the country will move to a lockdown level where the race can go ahead. So, training continues. Today’s ride is an easy one of just 90 minutes with a short, low intensity sprint every 15 minutes. Thought I’d wear my @teamnovonordisk kit for it. Next week will only be very easy riding. While I’m really apprehensive about this race, mostly because of it being 151km in length, I still want it to happen. Today I raced in the 4th and final round of the @c Today I raced in the 4th and final round of the @cyclingotago Ricoh Winter Worlds series. Another circuit course where 4 laps totalled a little over 36km. Due to a morning that I personally described as a “shambles” I only made it to the race with less than 10 minutes to spare before my grade, Category 3, started. Not ideal and my legs weren’t great. But I pushed through and managed to sprint for second place! P1 at the last round and then P2? Happy with the consistency! And the medal from today’s race goes well enough with the other one. Diabetes wasn’t perfect with my blood glucose level being a little bit higher than I wanted during the race, but that’s ok. My Garmin seems to think I need quite some time to recover from today’s riding. #typeonecyclist #typeonediabetes #cycling #roadcycling #racing
Today was the mass start Milk Race in @waitaki_nz. Today was the mass start Milk Race in @waitaki_nz. A course of a little over 60km consisting of three laps of a rolling circuit including a total of 861 meters of climbing. The climbs were tough enough to completely wreck my legs. But there were other challenges of the day, including messing up my diabetes regime and having a diabetes tech issue stopping my blood glucose level from showing on my Garmin bike computer. Blood glucose level dropped pretty low and I nearly pulled out of the race. Quick hit of glucose had me back and I finished the race. @cyclingotago made a good showing with riders placing 3rd and 4th! Thanks @claireyfairy79 for the pics and doing the driving and @infected_im_007 for the support (and congrats on that 4th place!!!)! The @teamnovonordisk kit did its job and I found another cyclist on course who has Type 1 Diabetes! Awesome! #typeonecyclist #typeonediabetes #roadcycling #roadrace

While attempting a cycling challenge known as “Everesting”, I had a crash and fractured my pelvis and my femur as shown in red circles in the pics. I’ve been writing about what happen in my blog! Today I raced after a lengthy break away from raci Today I raced after a lengthy break away from racing. Today was the third round of the @cyclingotago Ricoh Winter Worlds series. I hadn’t entered either of the first two rounds due to either other commitments or the race not quite fitting into my current training plan. So how I would go in the race was a complete mystery! So I donned the @teamnovonordisk kit and braved the cold. There weren’t too many entrants (too cold???) so I think we started with 7 or 8 in our category. Suffered a bit in the mid parts of the race but managed to watch all the correct moves and get the win! So after getting sick a few weeks back and having So after getting sick a few weeks back and having no energy to train for a good few weeks, I’m back riding again. First up was a #zwift session to see if I could handle a a wee spell without coughing too much or feeling wrecked afterwards. I’d actually been out for a bit of a gentle spin before hand so decided to keep my @teamnovonordisk kit on. Good news is I survived the ride. Into the next lot of training I go. Today’s session on the bike was a tough one. I’m l Today’s session on the bike was a tough one. I’m lucky enough that my coach has access to a lab where tests, including VO2 Max tests, can be done. And I’m lucky enough that my training plan includes VO2 Max tests. So today I put on my @teamnovonordisk kit for some inspiration and rode to the lab and put on a Bane from Batman like mask then breathed through a tube while riding a stationary bike until my legs gave up and I was basically hyperventilating. At this point you might ask how my day could get better? Well, then it was off to ride hills. And they hurt. Tonight’s #zwift workout was the same as one I did Tonight’s #zwift workout was the same as one I did last week but with another reverse pyramid set added for the extra ouch. I’ll admit I was apprehensive given how much three sets hurt last time. A fourth did NOT disappoint! After a pretty bad low on the commute home from work the diabetes pretty much couldn’t have been better during the workout! Less than two weeks till race day! So after some deliberation and encouragement or... So after some deliberation and encouragement or... fashion consultation 🤔 I pulled trigger on buying some @teamnovonordisk kit. While I’m not usually a fan of wearing full team kit for a pro cycling team I feel that as a #type1diabetic this kit is entirely relevant and a suitable message for me to display. Besides... I didn’t buy the socks, gloves and don’t ride the same bike brand! 😂 Today was new kit day and the first day I wore it. It is great kit. I decided to trial what a lot of people would call a dinner-plate cassette on the bike for today’s hilly ride. 32 teeth enabled me to ride the hills a bit easier and give me an idea of how it might help in the race I’m training for which is really hilly! Diabetes mostly behaved today with an insulin basal rate reduced by 33% for the duration of the ride which was nearly 5 hours. Using erg mode in a Zwift workout helps me hit the numbers set for me by my coach during these sessions. Now I just have to get the legs into shape for a weekend full of long rides, including lots of climbing! #typeonecyclist #training #diabetes #roadcycling
Today’s training ride will be a bit of a challenge Today’s training ride will be a bit of a challenge, but given how my diabetes has been handling the increased training lately (not perfectly!!!) I’m wondering whether the near-mountain of food I’m taking (including some glucose to@fix any hypos along the way) will a) be enough and b) fit in my pockets. What I do know is that this ride will definitely nail the @strava climbing challenge for this month! Ugh. I’m wrecked. Since deciding only a few weeks Ugh. I’m wrecked. Since deciding only a few weeks ago to commit to a race and the training for it, I’ve done some tough rides as prescribed by my coach. This week has been the... third? week I’ve been training hard and wow did I need a recovery ride today, because tomorrow there’s a bit of a leg-wrecker on the schedule. Recovery days are made all that much better by warm, sunny weather! #typeonecyclist #roadcycling #training #recoveryday
Tonight was the first time this year I pinned on a Tonight was the first time this year I pinned on a race number for a race in real life. The race was a club race put on by @cyclingotago and is always a flat and quick race. As shown by the graph from my @dexcom #cgm I pretty much nailed the #diabetes side of things, although a little more of a buffer would have been nice. I already had a lowered basal insulin rate on for before and during the race, so a bit more food was probably needed. But even though I emptied the tank to the point where with a couple of kilometres to go I thought I was toasted, I managed to hold on and roll in with the bunch in what was a messy sprint. Pretty satisfied. Just dreading what my coach has in store for me on the back of that race, given my Garmin says I need 71 hours to recover from the race and today’s commuting by bike. #typeonediabetes #roadcycling #roadrace #diabates
Today’s training ride called for a “solid ride” ov Today’s training ride called for a “solid ride” over a hill ive ridden many, many times, but with no coffee stop on the other side before climbing back over? Rough. But, following coach’s orders kept on keeping on and rode over and back before stopping at the top of the hill for some photos and some reflection on how things were going before what really is one of my favourite descents on a bike. Home with a little under 60km and a little over 1000m climbing in the legs. Tomorrow calls for 3 hours easy but with some very short higher intensity surges. Then if the ducks line up, first club race is Monday night! #typeonecyclist #typeonediabetes #cycling #training #hills
